Proofreading service

What’s included?

  • Working on your page proofs (ideally on-screen in PDF format), I’ll check for essential spelling, punctuation and grammar errors, in case any irksome inaccuracies have evaded the copyedit.

  • If necessary, I’ll make (or suggest) minor changes for sense.

  • I’ll look carefully at the layout to check things like consistency of spacing, correctly styled headers and subheaders, and that all design and styling decisions have been implemented correctly.

  • I’ll cross-check the list of Contents (and any other lists) against the pages themselves, and ensure any page references in the text itself are correct.

  • I’ll check figure and table numbering to make sure it’s consecutive and matches any cross-references in the text, and ensure that these and any other graphics are correctly placed in the text.

  • I’ll check the presentation of any citations and references to ensure they are styled correctly and consistently.

  • … and anything else we’ve agreed in advance will form part of my role.

Procedure

If I’m proofreading a text for you I’ll work on-screen in PDF format using Adobe Acrobat Reader. I’ll mark my suggested amendments directly onto the document, using the in-application Comments and Annotations, making it as easy as possible for you and your designer to see and assess them. If necessary, I’ll include queries too, although these can be supplied in the form of a separate list if you prefer.

Keeping in touch

Communication is key to producing a result that meets your requirements. That’s why I’ll keep in touch with you throughout the project, both to ask you questions (if necessary) and to respond promptly to any queries or concerns you may have along the way.
