Ideally, copyediting takes place after your text has already been thoroughly checked and tightened up by a developmental editor.

Proofreading service

Once your text has been thoroughly edited, designed and is at final layout stage, it’s time to proofread it. This is the final check before publication, so although it’s normal for a few errors to have slipped through the net, it’s not the time to be making extensive changes (that should already have happened at the copyediting stage).
